The Philosophy of Far Cry
An inquiry
The Far Cry series by developer Ubisoft is well known for its exotic locations, blazing action, and memorable villains. However, this emphasis on the villain in the series did not start until Far Cry 3 with the signature character Vaas.
Vaas was a psychotic murdering human trafficking pirate who ironically captivated audiences. Similar attempts at villain creation were attempted in subsequent sequels, Pagan Min in Far Cry 4 and Joseph Seed in Far Cry 5. What Vaas, Pagan, and Joseph have in common is a spark of insanity. These characters and the player are literally doing the same shit over and over again on the same gameplay loop expecting a different result. But the results are the same, kill enemies and stop the bad guy until the next sequel.
Nevertheless, the one villain which breaks this loop of insanity is Anton Castillo. Anton is a run-of-the-mill dictator of a fictional Latin American country in Far Cry 6. What separates him is not the fact he is played by actor Giancarlo Esposito or his characterization… what separates him is his spark of sanity.
